Donna Hawkins Named Official Artist-in-Residence for 2011 Caxton Street Seafood & Wine Festival!
Donna Hawkins is taking on the mantle of Official Artist in Residence at the 2011 Caxton Street Seafood and Wine Festival on Sunday 1 May. Donna will create a community artwork from 11am to 4pm, when Festival goers will be encouraged to participate in the creation of a Caxton Street Collage. Festival attendees will be invited to add their artistic strokes to two panels which will embrace Donna’s vibrant centre piece painting of Caxton Street. Once completed, the artwork will be auctioned and all profits donated to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.
"My friend and photographer, Peter Enright, came with me to Caxton Street and he took some great shots of the street and all the businesses there. I then had fabulous reference pictures to produce the Caxton Street painting. It took six days to complete. I wanted it to be very colourful, full of life and fun. It became quite a jumble of buildings and interesting logos. Perspective was thrown out the window in order to fit everyone in! I incorporated all the symbolic icons in the street.”

Brisbane visual artist Donna Hawkins created a public art work based on the question, 'Why do you love Queensland?'
Donna: "I wanted to create an artwork that the public could participate in, something that would be a reminder of why we love Queensland. I also wanted it to be a fitting tribute to Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and her emergency management team, their tireless efforts and community spirit they showed during the recent natural disasters, the tragic widespread flooding and cyclone Yasi damage in January 2011.
It's a colourful and fun piece and it was wonderful to engage with people on the street about why they love Queensland. People were quite enthusiastic; the warm weather, beaches and relaxed, friendly people were the answers most often given."
